About Sugar in the Dirt

    What does the weather sound like? Can you imagine the soundtrack to a silent movie about emotion? Sugar in the Dirt is here to fill in all the gaps. The group recently released “TsHs”, a brief collection of dissonant ballads and brazen battle hymns. The group makes the most of their sparse instrumentation (guitar, drums, bass, violin) clarifying their musical message with lush vocal harmonies and thoughtful arrangements. The music is often soft, but never tepid, dynamic, yet easily digestible. “TsHs” is a comprehensive guide to the band’s ability. From “Clear Skies” red glare, to the bombs of “Tranquilo” bursting in air, the band charts a fantastic voyage through the rocky seas of sound gracefully surviving the storm. It’s hard to imagine 4 sets of hands producing this record, which makes few embellishments from their live show. Although their hometown of Winston-Salem, North Carolina is not as legendary as Chapel Hill or Asheville for it’s musical cultivation, NC natives know that a special thread connects the few and far between success stories of this sleepy town. Outside of the spotlight, Winston-Salem’s artisans are free to create without boundaries or limitations. Few bands take advantage of this freedom. Sugar in the Dirt not only colors out side of the box, but also finds new dimensions in which to scribble.
